Leading Writer George Bainborough was serving at HMS Tamar in Hong Kong when the Japanese invaded and survived the sinking of the Lisbon Maru. He was a lifelong friend of Arnold Topliff. His story about his captivity comprises part of the Imperial War Museum sound archive here. George Bainborough remained in the Royal Navy after the war, being promoted to Chief Petty Officer Writer. He died in 1988.
